Building Permits
The province of Nova Scotia is preparing to adopt the 2020 edition of the National Building Code, National Fire Code, National Plumbing Code and the National Energy Code. Prior to the adoption which set for April of 2025, public review and input is being requested. If you would like to examine the proposed changes and provide input, you can do so by following this link. Review and input runs until December 19, 2024.
When do you need a permit?
- When building a new house, relocations of homes including modular homes, mini homes, and mobile homes
- When building an addition onto any home or building
- When building a garage or accessory building
- Structural repairs or renovations
- Demolition of a structure

What type of permit do you need?
Occupancy Permit
Applicants of a Building Permit will be required to obtain an Occupancy Permit upon completion of such building prior to occupancy.
In accordance with Section 8(b) of the Nova Scotia Building Code Act it is unlawful to occupy a house without an Occupancy Permit.

If you are a resident of the Town of Kentville and would like to apply for a permit, please contact the Town of Kentville at 902-679-2500. All residents within town boundaries must make application at the town hall located at 354 Main Street, Kentville.
