Consultation - Greenwood Well
The Greenwood Water Utility wants to add a third well to their water source to ensure there is ample water for its customers for years to come. The Municipality of the County of Kings wants to consult and include residents in the process as well as inform you of the intended outcome of establishing a new well. We want you to know and understand how the proposed new well location could affect you and we need your help to determine the opportunities and constraints the proposed location may have.
Locating a new production presents both technical and land use challenges in normal circumstances. These challenges are magnified in Greenwood given the groundwater contamination issues in the Bowlby Park area and at CFB Greenwood. This project was originally approved in FY2014/15 as part of an assessment of the long-term requirements. Part of the consideration is to have an independent source of water in case the primary source is compromised. The ideal production well would produce a sufficient amount of clean water that requires little treatment, is in a geologic formation that is resistant to external pollutants, in reasonable proximity to the Utility, and is in a less developed area so that the required wellfield protection zones have little impact on neighbouring properties.
It is not easy to find such a well in the Greenwood area. A number of test wells have been drilled with varying degrees of success. In 2017, a potential well location was identified near the intersection of Highway 201 and Bedford Road in Greenwood. Staff note that there are a number of residential, commercial, and institutional uses in the area that could be impacted by a wellfield protection zone. These include a gas station, farm market, two schools, and a wastewater lift station. It is also located on Crown lands and would require an easement.
