SEWER & WATER UTILITY
Under the direction of the Engineering and Public Works Manager of Operations, the department operates and maintains 16 wastewater collection systems comprised of eight wastewater treatment plants. Of the eight wastewater treatment plants, six are aerated lagoons, one is an activated sludge process, and one is a sequential batch reactor process. There is also a laboratory at the regional sewage treatment plant in New Minas and a septage treatment facility at the Waterville sewage treatment plant. There are 70 pumping stations located throughout the Municipality, from Greenwood to Hants Border.
The department operates and maintains the Greenwood Water Utility, which provides a potable water supply to the Village of Greenwood and supports hydrants used for fire protection. Water connections are metered and billed quarterly according to actual consumption. Water is obtained from two high-quality ground water wells in the area. The water utility includes two 330,000 gallon above-ground tank reservoirs, a 50,000 gallon below ground tank, and a chlorine treatment system. The department also operates and maintains a small water utility for the Sandy Court area of Aylesford and a water utility for the Village of Canning, which supplies potable water and hydrants to the Village of Canning and to Kingsport.
